We’ve long sought an iPhone car mount that is subtle, simple, and actually works. Unfortunately, nothing has quite met our high standards. That is until today.
The STEELIE is simple magnetic ring that attaches to the back of your smartphone or tablet. The size of the STEELIE is in accordance with the device such that it can address the weight, so it shouldn’t ever be too bulky or cumbersome. A handle can be adhered – called a HOBKNOB – though we believe its cache is in the car.

Using 3M adhesive tape you attach the stand to your car’s dash (the same adhesive is used to attach the STEELIE to your device). Once in place, you just simply need to hover the device close by, where upon it will be magnetically drawn into place. And since no hinges are involved, you can adjust your device at virtually any angle, which can also be said for the desktop mount. We’re not too jazzed about the idea of a 3M adhesive strip since it’s not exactly a permanent solution and there is a remote possibility it could come unstuck. Nevertheless, though, it shouldn’t leave any residue and it’s the most discreet option we could think of, especially when it comes to mounting a smartphone phone or tablet in a vehicle.
STEELIE is Kickstarter project. Funding starts at $10, though you’ll want to drop $25 to get the car kit.
